Real-time strategic planning

One of the most exciting things I’m doing these days is facilitate “real-time” strategic planning using a dynamic new model developed by David LaPiana.

We’ve all participated in traditional strategic planning – with 30,000-foot environmental scans and SWOT analyses – and then watched the overly ambitious and abstract results gather dust on a shelf.

Drawing on years of experience with a wide variety of organizations, LaPiana has pioneered a new approach that focuses on strategic thinking, rather than planning, and produces useful tools organizations can use on an ongoing basis to respond strategically to challenges and opportunities as they arise.

As I use this new model, I find my clients appreciate how quickly it gets at the “big questions” they are facing, and provides them with the tools to make pragmatic, actionable decisions. If you’re considering strategic planning – or facing an immediate challenge that requires a strategic response – I encourage you to consider this dynamic approach. It’s efficient, it’s scalable and it really works!

You can learn more about LaPiana’s real-time strategic planning model at his web site. His book The Nonprofit Strategy Revolution is available from the Fieldstone Alliance.

I’d be happy to lead your organization through the process! Give me a call if you’d like to discuss it.

Posting a follow-up with results is a great idea. I’ll check with my clients and see if they’re comfortable with having me provide more detail; if not, I suppose I can post something more “generic” that doesn’t identify them.

  5. Received your site via bing the other day and absolutely love it. Continue the great work.

Can you give a back of the envelope sense of how long it would take a four branch not for profit to go through real time strategic planning process – right up to the development of programmatic strategies. We are looking at 6 months -

  7. David Fey says:

The initial work can be completed in a one-day (6-8 hour) planning retreat. Then, depending on the number of major strategic questions the group identifies, the rest of the process can be completed during one or more shorter follow-up sessions.

I’d be happy to discuss the process, if you’d like to give me a call at (612) 703-4511.

  8. Where did you get that great theme – can you mail me the link please
